Research by Hamilton College Assistant Professor of Economics Stephen Wu was included in articles in Clinnix and on HealthandAge.com. The article included:
"Professor Stephen Wu, from New York's Hamilton College, found that people in poor health were less likely to ask about screening for cancer....
He assessed data from the Health and Retirement Study, carried out by the University of Michigan, and the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey, conducted by the Agency for Health Research and Quality. ... The results showed that individuals who were generally in poor health were less likely to have mammograms, pap smears, breast exams and prostate checks.
'These results have definite implications for health policy as well as healthcare costs,' Prof Wu warns.
Writing in the Journal of Health Economics, he says there is a significant amount of anxiety associated with cancer screens, especially among the sick, something which is not present for more routine procedures such as flu shots and cholesterol checks. "
