De Bao Xu, professor of East Asian Languages and Literatures, was invited to give a plenary speech at the 2009 Conference and Workshops on Basic Education in China and Overseas, at Guangxi Teacher’s University, Guangxi, China, July 14-17.

His speech was titled “The Role of Classical Chinese in the Development of Modern Chinese Reading and Writing Skills.” The conference was co-organized by the Education and Science Society in Washington, D.C .,and the Education Department of Guangxi Autonomous Region, and was sponsored by ACC at Hamilton College, the Council of Education of Minmeng Party, University of Washington, Hong Kong Tian, Jiabing Foundation, and Taiwan Trust Foundation.

About 750 people from more than 10 provinces and autonomous regions in West and Southwest China attended the conference.
