Associate Professor of Chinese De Bao Xu has published two new textbooks, Intermediate Chinese Course I and Intermediate Chinese Course II, in collaboration with Hong Gang Jin and others. The books were published by Beijing University Press as a new textbook series for teaching Chinese as a Second Language in January 2005.

Xu and Jin have collaborated on seven Chinese textbooks since 1995, which have been widely adopted in the field of teaching Chinese as a second language. Their textbook series (textbook, workbook, videotape, audiotapes, and multimedia CD-ROM) Chinese Breakthrough-Learning Chinese through TV and Newspapers (published in 1995) "has been adopted all over the world in England, Germany, Spain and at such places as the Calgary school system in Canada, and the Auckland Institute in Australia. In the United States, both high schools and colleges are using this series, from East Coast to West Coast, as well as government agencies such as the CIA. Some examples are Shawnee Mission schools in Kansas, the Berlitz schools, Middlebury College, Duke University, Carnegie Mellon University, Phillips Exeter Academy, the California State University system, San Francisco State University, and the University of Iowa..."
