Professor Brianna Burke presents a double feature of Billy Luther’s award-winning documentaries.

2 p.m. Miss Navajo (2007, 58 minutes)

In Miss Navajo, the role of women and tradition in Dine (Navajo) culture is explored through a young woman's quest for the Miss Navajo Nation crown.

3:30 p.m. Frybread Face and Me (2023, 83 minutes)

Filmed in New Mexico with an almost entirely Indigenous crew, Frybread Face and Me shares the journey of two Navajo cousins, Benny and Dawn (or “Frybread Face”), who come together for one summer to live on their grandmother’s ranch. It is a story of family, hardship, loyalty, and knowing the importance of one’s roots.

It was the narrative feature debut of writer and director Billy Luther.

F.I.L.M. events are are held in the Bradford Auditorium, Kirner-Johnson 125 and are free and open to the public.
