2 p.m. McElwee’s Remake (2026) Golden Globes Impact Prize for Documentary—Venice Film Festival
Ross McElwee is a major figure in the history of personal documentary but when his son Adrian died from an opioid overdose at McElwee’s home on December 24, 2016 his career seemed over. The history that led to this tragic death is the central thread of Remake and provided McElwee with the most serious cinematic challenge of his career-- if and how to face his son’s death cinematically.
7 p.m. Kim’s Defectors (2023) Special Jury Award at the Visions du Réel International Film Festival
When the Korea Armistice Agreement “ended” the Korean War in 1953, Asia was left with two separate Koreas. In many cases this separation resulted in marriages and families divided by time and the ongoing gap between the two Koreas. Hyun Kim explores the impact of this ongoing separation on herself, her family, and people she knows who defected from North Korea.
