How to be Prepared
- Know the location of both the muster point and assembly points for the primary buildings where you reside, teach, work, etc., and understand the difference between the two.
- Always respond to an evacuation signal (fire alarm) as if it were an actual emergency.

Emergency Action Plans
1. Law Enforcement Emergencies

Active Shooter/Hostile Intruder On Campus
If you witness (or are otherwise directly involved in) an active shooter/hostile intruder incident on campus and your life is in imminent danger, take the following actions: RUN, HIDE, FIGHT!

Biological Agent Threats (Suspect Mail)
If you receive a suspicious letter or package on campus, and it is unopened, do not shake or empty the contents of the letter or package.

If you observe a suspicious object or potential bomb on campus, DO NOT HANDLE THE OBJECT! Clear the area and immediately call Campus Safety (315-859-4000).

Suspicious Persons On/Near Campus
Be vigilant for persons engaging suspicious activity.
2. Medical Emergencies

Medical Emergencies or Injuries
Know the location of safety equipment (eye wash stations/bottles, emergency showers, first aid kits) in your area, and how to use them—where applicable. Adhere to the “Check, Call, Care” regimen regarding injuries.

Outbreaks of Infectious/Communicable Disease
Due to the nature of college life, emergency actions/responses regarding infectious or communicable disease rely on prevention and identification/containment/control strategies.
3. Occupational or Residential Emergencies

As a precaution against CO exposure hazards, all dormitory facilities are equipped with CO detectors tied into existing fire detection/suppression systems.

In the event of a building explosion (related to fires or from a vehicular/aircraft explosion into a building on campus), immediately take cover under tables, desks and other objects, which will give protection against falling/flying glass or debris.

If a minor fire appears controllable, IMMEDIATELY contact Campus Safety at 315-859-4000, who will contact the fire department. If a fire is not controllable, an emergency exists. If a building alarm has not automatically activated, manually activate the building alarm at the nearest pull station to signal an evacuation, report the fire by phone, evacuate all rooms and close all doors behind you to confine the fire and reduce oxygen—DO NOT LOCK DOORS!!
4. Environmental Emergencies

Any emergency spill of a hazardous chemical or radioactive material should be reported primarily to Campus Safety 315-859-4000, and secondarily to the Director of Environmental Protection, Safety & Sustainability 315-859-4647.

Most gas “odors” external to buildings, when they are not accompanied with “hissing” sounds, are nothing more than this equalization process, and Facilities Management 315-859-4500 or the Director of Environmental Protection, Safety & Sustainability 315-859-4647, may be called to confirm that no emergency exists. However, if gas odors are strongly detected inside or outside, and/or if the odors are accompanied by hissing sounds, an immediate emergency exists.

All personnel should have a general awareness of where systems and equipment with the potential for an environmental release are located, relative to the buildings where they normally work or reside.

An emergency spillage of a petroleum product (oil, gasoline, fuel oil, etc.) exists in the following situations: there is an immediate threat of fire or explosion (based upon the type/quantity of spilled materials, and location to nearby equipment/processes); or there is an uncontrolled release of petroleum product to the environment (like a stormwater drain).
