Where Virtual Hamilton

Event Description

Join Vice President for Administration and Finance Karen Leach for insights into proposed changes to the endowment tax on colleges and universities. Currently at 1.7%, the tax could be raised to as much as 21%, and will impact how a smaller school like Hamilton can maintain its financial health over the next four years and beyond. Leach will discuss the impacts of a tax hike and share perspectives based on a visit she had with the U.S. Senate and Congress at the end of April. Additionally, we plan to discuss the impacts of the loss of federal funds on other institutions, including Harvard and Berkeley, and what that means in the larger landscape. A question-and-answer period will be moderated by Vice Chair of the Community Engagement Committee Peggy Garte ’01, with time to discuss how alumni and parents can engage in constructive conversations about higher education funding.

This is the second in a series of virtual conversations responding to the current political and social climate. In the spirit of Hamilton’s mission to know ourselves and foster lives of meaning, purpose, and active citizenship, we invite alumni to join us for this series of discussions about changes our country is experiencing and has faced over time. Our goal is to build a community, just as you did while on campus, around introspection, civil discourse, and shared pursuits as we ponder what motivates us to be active citizens now and in the future.
