Event Description

ARTH/CNMS/DARTS 314 - Magazines: Digital Approaches to Print Media is an interdisciplinary, research lab-style seminar that focuses on popular, mass-market, illustrated periodicals from the 20th century. One of our main questions was, how can digital tools help us understand print visual culture?

For their final projects, students worked in teams to design their own digital humanities (DH) project on a magazine whose full run could be accessed at Burke Library. They articulated compelling and original research questions, and spent hours poring over issues of Vogue, National Geographic, and Life to answer those questions.

Featured here are:

-The results of their data collection, including large-scale patterns and individual page views;

-Their proposals for a large-scale DH project, including mock-ups and models of what their project may look like with additional time and resources.
