Event Description
Professor Justin Clark (Philosophy) will lead this 17-day interdisciplinary program in Vietnam on topics related to human rights, conflict resolution, and peace studies in partnership with Youthlinc, and faculty partners from other participating institutions. During this experiential learning journey, a team of 8-10 Hamilton students will seek to better understand how history, culture, and narratives shape the modern state of Vietnam.
Students will travel the length of the country—from Ho Chi Minh City in the South to Hanoi in the North—engaging deeply with Vietnamese history, culture, and politics. The program will explore the complex legacy of foreign intervention, the war with the United States, and the modern use of narrative and memory in the construction of national identity and place. In the process, we consider how Vietnam understands itself, and how it remembers its past both to its own citizens and to the broader world in an increasingly globalized era.Faculty-led reflection and discussion will be central to the experience, complemented by site visits to key historical and cultural landmarks. Program expenses, including housing, travel, and most meals will be generously supported by the Alan “Mac” McCullough Endowment, which funds Public Philosophy programming at Hamilton. This opportunity is open to all rising Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors, with special consideration given to first-generation students.
