Event Description
The Art Department's Visiting Artist Series presents Kurt Kauper.
Kurt Kauper paints historical and imagined figures, along with the occasional still life. Though meticulously rendered with illusionistic clarity and formal precision, his works are marked by indeterminacy and narrative ambiguity. He considers himself primarily motivated by formal concerns. For both political and creativereasons, he privileges engaging with a well-known visual language—in his case, traditional representation—and presenting it as if unfamiliar, rather than pointing to states of affairs, narrating stories, or conveying determinate information.
Kauper has had solo shows at ACME Gallery in Los Angeles, Deitch Projects in New York, Almine Rech Gallery, New York, Marc Selwyn Fine Art, Los Angeles, and Ortuzar, NY. He has participated in numerous group exhibitions in the United States and Europe, including the Whitney Museum of American Art, thePompidou Center in Paris, Kunsthalle Vienna, and the Stedelijk Museum in Ghent. He has received awards from the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation, the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation, and the Pollock-Krasner Foundation. His work is included in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the WhitneyMuseum of American Art; the Hammer Museum; the Art Institute of Chicago; the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; the Weatherspoon Museum; and the Yale University Art Gallery.
He has taught at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Yale University, Princeton University, and the New York Academy of Art. He is currently Associate Professor of Art at Queens College, New York City. He is represented by Marc Selwyn Fine Art in Los Angeles and Ortuzar Projects in New York.
