Treasure the Obstacle: The Humanities, Higher Education, and the Age of AI

As AI systems reshape how we read, write, research, and teach, many of us in higher education find ourselves somewhere between real concern and cautious curiosity. The humanities have long valued things that sit uneasily with a technology designed for speed and certainty: ambiguity, multiple voices, open questions, the slow work of struggling with a text or an idea. What happens to those values when getting stuck can be automated away, and might there be ways to engage these tools that deepen rather than short-circuit them? Drawing on experiments in teaching and research, Beal invites us to explore such questions together.

Timothy Beal is Distinguished University Professor, Florence Harkness Professor of Religion, and Director of the new Humanity and Technology major at Case Western Reserve University.
