Event Description

"A Survey of the Institution of Motherhood," Presented by Linda Xiao  and "Remembering la Mission Héliographique: an Archival Exploration of Six ParisianExhibitions" Presented by Annabel Pearson

4: 30 pm This research project provides a philosophical analysis of the institution of motherhood in the modern period. It evaluates the role of mothers in society in the past 200 years and contemporary time. Subtopics include but are not limited to subjectivity under the Existentialist framework, the portrait of mothers in 19th century literature, and the reproduction of the institution of motherhood in the Euro-Atlantic World.

5 pm The historiography of the 1851 Mission Héliographique provides insight into themonumentalization of early photography in France’s cultural patrimony. This research draws upon written and visual archival materials to examine how six Parisian exhibitions presented the Mission’s images and history to the public after 1980. This presentation will discuss key primary sources and situate the exhibitions in contemporary State-run cultural programs and developments in the global art market.
