Associate Professor of Africana Studies Nigel Westmaas presented a paper titled “Firebrands, Trade Unionists and Marxists: The Russian Revolution and the Emergence of the Left in Guyana 1917-1956” at the Institute for Black Atlantic Research, University of Central Lancashire, on Oct. 15.

Associate Professor of Africana Studies Nigel Westmaas unearthed and published, with an introductory assessment, a significant speech made by a pioneer Guyanese and Caribbean labor leader Hubert Nathaniel Critchlow in March 1932. The Westmaas article, “Hubert Critchlow and the nexus between Christianity and Socialism” was published in Guyana’s national newspaper, the Stabroek News, on Aug. 20.

Associate Professor of Africana Studies Nigel Westmaas presented a paper on the topic “The Historical and Contemporary Contours of Guyanese Philosophy” in Georgetown, Guyana, on May 23.

Associate Professor of Africana Studies Nigel Westmaas has published eight mini biographies of prominent historical and contemporary Guyanese figures in the newly released Dictionary of Caribbean and Afro-Latin American Biography (DCALAB).

It recently escalated when Venezuela made aggressive statements and troop buildups on Guyana’s western border in the wake of the recent discovery of oil in Guyana’s territorial waters.

Associate Professor of Africana Studies Nigel Westmaas was a guest on Jamaica Radio’s NewsTalk93FM for a discussion of Guyana’s national elections on May 11. He addressed the significance of the elections for Guyana’s future and the prospects for political and social change.

Associate Professor of Africana Studies Nigel Westmaas published a book review in the latest issue of The Arts Journal (Guyana and the Caribbean). He reviewed The Sky's Wild Noise: Selected Essays, a book published in 2013 by Guyanese writer Rupert Roopnaraine. Westmaas deemed the book an “almost complete witness to Roopnaraine’s discerning mind in the field of arts, literature, and politics.”

Associate Professor of Africana Studies Nigel Westmaas was a guest on WRFG Radio Atlanta in a Jan. 24 discussion on poverty and the global political economy. In the backdrop of the Davos World Economic forum Westmaas highlighted the growing gap between the super-rich and big capital on the one hand and the poor and global inequality on the other.

Associate Professor of Africana Studies Nigel Westmaas spoke on Radio Atlanta WRFG on the significance of the August 1st Emancipation Day which is celebrated in the Anglophone Caribbean.

Three Hamilton College faculty members were approved for tenure by the College’s board of trustees during a recent meeting. The board granted tenure to Jessica Burke, Hispanic studies, Jane Springer, English and creative writing, and Nigel Westmaas, Africana studies.
