How to Determine the Meaning of a Sacred Text, a collection of 22 essays by Walcott-Bartlett Professor of Religion Jay Williams ’54, was recently published by Edwin Mellen Press. The essays, written over a period of almost 40 years, cover a variety of subjects including mythology, the Hebrew scriptures, Confucian texts, Buddhist texts, gospels and classical spiritual poetry.

"Thomas Nast Celebrates the Holidays," an exhibition of the collection of illustrations of Jay G. Williams '54, has opened at The Arts Center in Old Forge, NY, and will run through Feb. 6. The show presents pictures of Santa Claus and the celebration of Christmas by the 19th century cartoonist Thomas Nast.

Two reviews by Jay G. Williams '54, the Walcott-Bartlett Professor of Religious Studies, appeared recently in the fall issue of The Quest. He reviewed Joseph Chiltoon Pearce's The Death of Religion and the Rebirth of the Spirit and What is Hinduism? Modern Adventures into a Profound Faith compiled by the editors of Hinduism Today. Earlier in the year The Quest also published two other reviews by Williams: Shaikh Sharfuddin Maneri's Letters from a Sufi Teacher, trans. Baijnath Singh, and Catherine Albanese's A Republic of Mind and Spirit: A Cultural History of American Metaphysical Religion.

Walcott-Bartlett Professor of Religious Studies Jay G. Williams '54 recently published an article,"The Spiritual in Poetry," on the Bestthinking.com Web site. The site is not open to everyone but recognized scholars are invited to join and submit articles to share with other members and the world.

Jay Williams ’54, the Walcott-Bartlett Professor of Religion, published an article, "The Gospel of John (or is it Ch'an)" on the bibleinterp.com Web site. As the title suggests, it offers a rather different approach to the fourth gospel, spelling out in more detail what Williams said at the Service of Remembrance during Reunions ’09 weekend.

Jay Williams '54, the Walcott-Bartlett Professor of Religion, published a book review of Catherine L. Albanese, A Republic of the Mind and Spirit: A Cultural History of American Metaphysical Religion (Yale University Press, 2007) in the summer 2009 edition of the Quest.

Professor of Religious Studies Jay Williams '54 will present an Alumni College during Reunions '09 on Thomas Nast, one of America's great political cartoonist.  Nast is credited with the creation of the Republican Elephant and the iconic Uncle Sam.
