In an email to the Hamilton community on June 22, Dean of Faculty Ngoni Munemo announced the death of Walcott-Bartlett Professor of Religion Emeritus Jay Williams ’54, P’83, GP’11, ’19. Wiliams was 90 years old.

Pictures from the collection of Jay Williams ’54, the Walcott-Bartlett Professor of Religion emeritus and lecturer in religious studies, are included in two exhibitions at the Fenimore Art Museum in Cooperstown, N.Y.

“Thomas Nast’s Winter Scenes,” an exhibition of prints from the collection of Jay Williams ’54, the Walcott-Bartlett Professor of Religion emeritus, will be on display Dec. 4- Jan. 4 at the Museum of the Southwest in Midland, Texas. A special opening preview party will be tonight (Dec. 3) at 7 p.m. as part of the museum’s “Christmas at the Mansion” celebration.

Jay Williams, the Walcott-Bartlett Professor of Religion emeritus, recently published Thomas Nast, America's Greatest Political Cartoonist. Published by Edwin Mellen Press, the book details how Nast’s many illustrations and cartoons relate to and illuminate American history.

Professor of Religious Studies emeritus Jay Williams ’54 published an article titled “An Open Letter” on the Bible and Interpretation website.

An exhibition featuring illustrations by Thomas Nast and Winslow Homer from the collection of Professor of Religious Studies Emeritus Jay G. Williams '54 is on view at the Fenimore Art Museum in Cooperstown.  “On the Home Front: New York in the Civil War” displays articles from the Civil War era and will be open through Dec. 31.

As is the custom at Hamilton, the Dean of Faculty recognizes retiring faculty and hosts a reception in their honor at the last faculty meeting of the academic year. On May 16, Dean of Faculty Patrick Reynolds honored four professors retiring this year: Professor of  Anthropology Charlotte Beck; Jim Bradfield, the Elias W. Leavenworth Professor of Economics; Professor of Government Ted Eismeier; and  Jay Williams ’54, the Walcott-Bartlett Professor of Religious Studies. Following are the tributes Reynolds read.

For the 10th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks Associate Professor of Music Heather Buchman conducted a special concert for remembrance and healing at St. Paul’s Episcopal Cathedral in Syracuse. The concert was organized by Syracuse-based theater director Victoria King who witnessed the attacks at close hand.

How to Determine the Meaning of a Sacred Text, a collection of 22 essays by Walcott-Bartlett Professor of Religion Jay Williams ’54, was recently published by Edwin Mellen Press. The essays, written over a period of almost 40 years, cover a variety of subjects including mythology, the Hebrew scriptures, Confucian texts, Buddhist texts, gospels and classical spiritual poetry.
