Petra Elfström ’18 combined her interests in archaeology, art and archaeology to make a film on the archaeological practices of the Slocan Narrows Archaeological Project.

The second annual Institute for Liberal Arts Scholarship (ILiADS) 2016 will be hosted at Hamilton College beginning on Sunday, July 24. Nearly 90 participants from more than 23 liberal arts colleges will be on campus for this project-based, team-based summer institute funded by the Andrew W. Mellon foundation. 

Passionate about storytelling, Samantha Donohue ’18 crafted a summer research project that plays to that interest.

The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation has awarded a one-time, $40,000 grant to Hamilton College, in collaboration with the College of Wooster, to support the second Institute for Liberal Arts Digital Scholarship (ILiADS.org) conference.

Janet Thomas Simons, co-director of the Digital Humanities Initiative (DHi), presented on a panel titled “Advancing Digital Humanities and Digital Scholarship at Liberal Arts Colleges: A Consortium Approach to Balancing Innovation and Preservation” during the Digital Library Federation (DLF) conference in Vancouver, B.C.

The Los Angeles Review of Books described Fourth City: Essays from the Prison in America as “an important work” in an Oct. 8 review titled “Locked Up in America: The Essay in the Age of Mass Incarceration.” Edited by Walcott-Bartlett Chair of Ethics and Christian Evidences Doran Larson, Fourth City is a collection of 71 essays by current and former prisoners on a wide range of topics about prison life, solicited over approximately five years.

The British Museum is one of the most prominent museums in the world, known for a wide range of collections dedicated to human history and culture. This summer, Lauren Scutt ’16 worked to improve one of those collections through an internship with the Museum’s Beyond Boundaries: Religion, Region, Language and the State project. 

Angel David Nieves, associate professor of Africana studies and co-director of the Digital Humanities Initiative (DHi) was awarded an NEH Office of Digital Humanities Advanced Topics in the Digital Humanities Summer Institutes Grant of $245,299 for “Space and Place in Africana/Black Studies: An Institute on Spatial Humanities Theories, Methods and Practice.” 

A consortium of 23 liberal arts institutions is hosting ILiADS, the Institute for Liberal Arts Digital Scholarship, at Hamilton through Aug. 2. The conference will explore digital humanities, pedagogy and scholarship from a liberal arts perspective.

Director of Research and Instruction Services Lisa Forrest recently published an article in College & Research Libraries News (C&RL News). “Going Analog and Getting Artsy: Programming in the Academic Library” highlighted novel ways that Hamilton’s librarians are supporting the college’s educational goals through programming.
