In its final meeting of the 2022-23 academic year, the Hamilton Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa elected 25 members of the Class of 2023.

Women's hockey defender Abby Kuhns '23 (Skaneateles, N.Y./Loomis Chaffee School [Conn.]) and men's golfer Billy Geach '23 (Harare, Zimbabwe/St. George's College) were honored as Hamilton College's top athletes from the Class of 2023 at the Jack B. Riffle Celebration for senior varsity athletes on Tuesday, May 16.

Some 159 students were honored with academic prizes and scholarships, and faculty were recognized for receiving teaching awards and dean’s scholarly achievement prizes, at Hamilton’s annual Class & Charter Day convocation on May 9. Earning special recognition were Ryan Smolarsky ’23, who received the James Soper Merrill Prize, and Eleanor “Ellie” Sangree ’24, who was awarded the Fillius Drown Scholarship.

Recently, Claire Williams '25 had the opportunity to spend time with two of the leading scientists in climate research: Hamilton alumnus Jonathan Overpeck ’79, the dean of the School of Environment and Sustainability at the University of Michigan, and Julia Cole, a professor of earth and environmental sciences there. As her professors had said throughout the week, these researchers are “big deals.”

Will Whalen’23 is a mild-mannered world politics major by day, but master of the mean, meowing Chess bot Mittens by night. Whalen, who moonlighted at Chess.com as a creative strategy lead while on campus, had the idea to create the cute kitty chess master that played an aggressive game of chess. Mittens has proven to be a formidable and frustrating opponent on the Chess.com website. Whalen will join Chess.com as director of audience development after graduation.

In an essay titled “The myth of ‘woke’ indoctrination of students” appearing in The Hill, President David Wippman began by pointing out that, “For the first time in decades, education policy has become a major issue in a Republican presidential campaign.” With co-author Cornell Professor Glenn Altschuler, he observed “Republicans have launched a scorched earth war against ‘woke education.’”

Elliot Carlson '23 and Jacob Gliedman '23 won this year’s Pitch Competition and $20,000 for their comprehensive career services platform RAIN, a product meant to “disrupt the job search process” by providing a way for job-seekers to explore, create, network, and execute the job recruitment process, all in one platform.

“Robust training and oversight [are] key,” said Hamilton Counseling Center Director David Walden as he described the College’s peer counselor program in a recent Wall Street Journal article. “With Therapists in Short Supply, College Students Counsel Each Other,” published on Feb. 12, provided an in-depth look into how Hamilton’s peer counselor program works, how peer counselors are able to “provide a supportive ear and not actual therapy [and] relieve some of the demand on the licensed therapists.”

Hamilton College's Nancy Loh '23 posted a goal and an assist and the Continentals' dream season continued with a 3-1 win against the Nazareth College Golden Flyers in a 2023 NCAA Division III Women's Hockey Championship first round game at Hamilton's raucous Russell Sage Rink on Wednesday night.
