Tompkins Professor of English emeritus, has published “Joyce’s Nymph of the Yews: Debates about the Nude in Painting” in The Dublin James Joyce Journal (no. 2/2009), a new peer-reviewed publication appearing under the auspices of the University College Dublin James Joyce Research Centre in association with the National Library of Ireland.

  • Austin Briggs, the Hamilton B. Tompkins Professor of English Literature emeritus, delivered a lecture titled "The Joys of Dickens: Reading Great Expectations" on behalf of PEN at the Belles Artes in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, on Feb. 2. The preceding week, at the San Miguel Biblioteca, Briggs introduced David Lean's adaptation of Dickens' novel, a film ranked number five in the British Film Institute's list of the 100 best British films of the 20th century.

  • Austin Briggs, the Hamilton B. Tompkins Professor of English, emeritus, attended the North American James Joyce Conference held at SUNY Buffalo in June. At the conference, he participated on a panel he co-organized, "Joyce and the Visual Arts," and he co-moderated two discussion panels that he co-organized. In addition, as a trustee, Briggs attended a meeting of the Board of the International James Joyce Foundation.

  • At the request of the International James Joyce Foundation, Austin Briggs, Hamilton B. Tompkins Professor of English Literature, emeritus, organized and chaired a panel, "Joyce and Memory," at the annual meeting of the Modern Language Association of America in San Francisco in December.

  • Class & Charter Day, Hamilton's annual convocation recognizing student and faculty excellence during the preceding academic year, will take place on Friday, May 9, at 12:15 p.m. in the Chapel. This year's speaker is Austin Briggs, the Hamilton B. Tompkins Professor of English Literature emeritus.  His talk is titled "The Good Old Days/The Bad Old Days." He has taught at Hamilton for more than 50 years. An all-campus picnic will follow the awards and HamTrek, the fifth annual campus triathalon, will begin at 2:30 p.m.
