From discussing what it means to become a well-known Black author to the nuances of writing during a pandemic, Roxane Gay and Kiese Laymon offered a conversation brimming with honesty and camaraderie for an otherwise isolated, at-home audience.

When Ryan Friedman ’21 entered Hamilton, he had no idea what he wanted to study, much less pursue after college. Now, the computer science major knows what he is passionate about and is an incoming software engineer at Bloomberg.

Amy Harff ’21, Jiin Jeong ’21, and Liam Prum ’21 have been named Watson Fellows, with each receiving a $36,000 stipend to pursue a “year of independent, purposeful exploration” abroad. The prestigious Thomas J. Watson Fellowship is awarded to graduating seniors nominated by one of 41 partner institutions.

Jonathan “Peck” Overpeck ’79 spent his senior year at Hamilton researching climate and vegetation change in the Adirondacks, an experience he suspects sowed the seeds of his life’s work.

Six faculty members were approved for tenure by Hamilton’s Board of Trustees at its recent meeting. They include Catherine Beck (geosciences), Erica De Bruin (government), Susan Jarosi (art history), Jaime Kucinskas, (sociology), Alexandra Plakias (philosophy), and Jesse Weiner (classics).

Construction is scheduled to begin in April on the $2 million structure, which is located on the Erie Canal in Rome’s Bellamy Harbor Park and should be ready to use in August.

Eleanna “Ele” Sorensen ’23 will hone her long-time interest in the Arabic language as the recipient of a U.S. Department of State Critical Language Scholarship (CLS).
