Under the leadership of Visiting Assistant Professor of English and Creative Writing Andrew Rippeon, first-year students in the Letterpress Printing and Book Arts Experience Adventure orientation group created a new honor code document that – from both tactile and visual perspectives – conveys the seriousness of its message. In a shift in tradition, the documents were distributed during convocation. After first-year students signed their copies, orientation leaders collected them and Honor Court Chair Taylor Elicegui ’17 presented them with Conor O’Shea ’18, a member of the court, to President Stewart.

Associate Professor of History Lisa Trivedi traveled to Kyoto, Japan, to present a paper at the 17th World Economic History Congress.  Her paper "A Swadeshi Economy: catalogues, shops, and depots" addressed the various ways in which a movement often characterized as anti-capitalist and anti-modern made effective use of new technologies and innovative marketing strategies to promote khadi, or handspun hand-woven cloth.

Seven students and alumni from the laboratory of Assistant Professor of Chemistry Max Majireck presented their research in a poster session at the 250th National Meeting of the American Chemical Society (ACS).

For students interested in government, a summer spent interning in Washington, D.C. is a dream come true. This summer Grant Whitney ’17 lived that dream as an intern for the United Nations Foundation, an organization that advocates on behalf of the United Nations. Whitney’s internship was made possible by the Joseph F. Anderson ’44 Internship Fund and provided him with valuable insight into the processes of government and law-making.

President Joan Hinde Stewart presided over the annual Convocation ceremony that officially opened Hamilton’s 204th year on Wednesday, Aug. 26. New to this year's ceremony was a collective signing of the honor code card by the entire class of 2019.

Sixty-one percent of Hamilton students study off campus for a semester or full year. Last summer and fall, Annie Whitehurst ’16 was one of those students, studying abroad through Hamilton’s Associated Colleges in China (ACC) program. After a summer and semester in Beijing, however, Whitehurst was not ready to leave China for good. She returned to Beijing this summer as an intern with the Foreign Commercial Service at the U.S. Embassy. With support from the Scott Steven Morris ’86 Fund managed by Hamilton’s Career and Life Outcomes Center, Whitehurst spent the summer planning events, conducting research, and enjoying more time in China.

As many who have tried computer coding know, the introductory languages used in the field can often be difficult to approach and unintuitive. It is with this in mind that Eric Collins ’17 and Alex Dennis ’18 with Associate Professor of Computer Science Alistair Campbell, are this summer creating a new programming language called CSPy geared specifically toward beginners.

The 475 members of Hamilton’s Class of 2019 got a glimpse of the area and at the same time helped area non-profit agencies when they participated in the 8th annual Hamilton Serves on Aug. 26.  Students spent the morning volunteering at one of 43 local non-profit agencies.

One day, Chloe Ma ’17 hopes to start her own international non-governmental organization. This summer she gained valuable experience toward that goal. With funding from the Summer Internship Support Fund, she worked as the summer operations intern at Global Nomads Group, a non-profit organization that uses technology to foster cultural exchange between youth all around the world. 

Christopher Powell ’17 has just returned home from a summer spent helping orphaned and displaced children in Guatemala through an internship with Tree 4 Hope, a U.S.-based non-profit. Powell was one of a number of students this year who received Levitt Public Service Internship Awards to fund their unpaid or minimally paid summer internships focusing on public service.
