Professor of Geosciences Barbara Tewksbury this summer was one of a small group of instructors involved in classroom and field training in geology for the new group of NASA astronauts selected in 2013. The instructors met the eight new astronauts in Houston for two weeks of classroom training in June, followed by a week of field mapping in July, during which the group camped and worked on the Taos Plateau in northern New Mexico.

Assistant Professor of Art Rob Knight took his Advanced Photo class (Art 302) on a field trip to the Society for Photographic Education Regional Conference in Albany on Oct. 19. Knight was one of the presenters, giving a talk on his Levitt Center-supported project In God's House.  

Professor of History Shoshana Keller discussed her recent work on two panels at the annual Central Eurasian Studies Society conference, held at Columbia University October 24-26.

Ten Hamilton seniors were elected to the Epsilon chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the nation’s oldest honor society, at the October meeting. The inductees are Paul Donahue, Brendon Kaufman, Jessica LeBow, Tara McDonald, Connor Miyamoto, Meghan O’Sullivan, Kevin Rovelli, Sara Wortman, Casey Wright and Hannah Zucker.

Abhishek Amar, assistant professor of religious studies, organized a panel titled "Reconfiguring Buddhism: Sites, Objects and Heritage in Modern South Asia" at the 43rd Annual Conference on South Asia, at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, on Oct. 18.

The Hamilton College English department will host a reading by Diane Raptosh, renowned poet and National Book Award finalist, on Wednesday, Oct. 29, at 8 p.m., in the Red Pit, KJ. The reading is free and open to the public.

Every year around late October or early November, Hindus, Jains and Sikhs across the globe gather to celebrate the festival of lights known as Diwali. Diwali signifies the spiritual victory of good versus evil, knowledge versus ignorance, and light versus darkness. Hamilton’s Asian Cultural Society (ACS) hosts Diwali each year and this year celebrated with an interactive DIY Rangoli.

Hamilton College Dean of Faculty Patrick Reynolds announced the promotion of three Hamilton faculty members to the rank of professor. Jennifer Borton, psychology; Sally Cockburn, mathematics; and Julio Videras, economics, were promoted effective Oct. 11.

Carl Rubino, the Winslow Professor of Classics, attended the annual meeting of the Classical Association of the Atlantic States (CAAS) on Oct. 9-11 in Washington, D.C.

Whether tight on cash or short on time, many us understand the concept of scarcity. Although scarcity is often analyzed through the lens of economics, Sendhil Mullainathan, professor of economics at Harvard University, has added the lens of psychology to his work. Co-author of Scarcity: Why Having Too Little Means So Much, he explained the major concepts of his work to an overflowing Chapel audience on Oct. 23.
