Hamilton College has joined the Liberal Arts Colleges Racial Equity Leadership Alliance this week as one of 51 inaugural member institutions. The alliance was launched by the University of Southern California Race and Equity Center on Nov. 9 and will afford faculty and staff of all member institutions with opportunities for learning and growth on issues of racial equity.

Communications office student writer Lucy Mixson ’24 recently took part in Spilled Ink, a student-led therapeutic writing session. In the following, she talks about the value of the experience.

“Michael Rakowitz: Nimrud,” the Wellin Museum of Art’s exhibition that opened in October, focuses on the loss of Iraq’s art and cultural wealth via colonization, archaeological exploration, and war. The exhibit focuses on the re-creation of Room H of the Northwest Palace of the ancient Assyrian city of Nimrud (Kalhu), constructed between 883 and 859 BCE, first excavated between 1845 and 1851 and thought to have included nearly 200 rooms.

During the course of the pandemic, Hamilton’s Counseling Center has had to quickly adapt to better meet the needs of students navigating social restrictions and a high-stress environment. The newly formed Hamilton Coalition for Justice and Democracy, born of a commitment to protect America’s democracy, held its inaugural meeting on Nov. 5 in response to President Trump’s false and problematic claims about the 2020 election. Thursday evening’s event attracted around 80 participants, including both students and faculty.

Utica City Court Judge Ralph Eannace, marriage and family therapist Kevin Lewis, and Hamilton Director of Community Standards Catherine Berryman discussed the question “How are We Handling Domestic Violence and Mental Health Interventions?” in a webinar moderated by Hamilton Professor Frank Anechiarico on Nov. 4.

Hamilton Government Professor Phil Klinkner, along with several other faculty from the Government Department, hosted live election coverage discussing the presidential race and its potential implications on Election Day, Nov. 3. Klinkner also provided analysis of incoming data and results with assistance from students in his “Political Parties and Elections” course.

From a desert in Somaliland to a campus residence hall room, a cast of Hamilton students and alumni will perform a collection of Shakespeare’s sonnets this week in a production that explores the meaning of community during the pandemic that has altered life around the globe.
