Five students were awarded prizes in three categories in the annual Public Speaking Competition on Saturday, March 4, in the Chapel. The finalists were chosen after an open preliminary round held in February. Speakers’ presentations were either persuasive or informative in nature, and in one category, students addressed an assigned topic.

Hamilton’s Club Curling Team will compete this weekend, March 10 to 12, in the National College Curling Championships at the Utica Curling Club, in Whitesboro, NY. This is the first year that the national championship will take place at the Utica Curling Club, which has a reputation as one of the finest clubs in the Northeast. Hamilton practices there regularly, and is hoping to have a home-ice advantage.

By the numbers, the Wellin Museum’s new exhibition, Julia Jacquette: Unrequited and Acts of Play, has been a great success with more than 1,500 visitors in the first two weeks since its opening.

When Hamilton community members recently gathered in the Kennedy Auditorium to hear John Werner ’92 talk about augmented reality, they quickly realized that this wouldn’t be a typical lecture. Werner interacted with the audience after each section of his presentation, soliciting comments and “a-ha moments” in order to get a sense of the individuals in the auditorium. He also brought his augmented reality device to demo and show students after the talk, which was the highlight for many.

The Institute for Advanced Studies (IAS) in Princeton, N.J., awarded Associate Professor of History John Eldevik a one-semester membership in the School of Historical Studies for the spring 2018 term. He also recently received a DAAD research grant.

In a mixture of lighthearted personal anecdotes and thought-provoking comments on today’s society, acclaimed poet Nikki Giovanni spoke about the importance of racial pride and civil rights activism during her public reading in the Chapel on March 6.

Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker will deliver the Commencement address and receive an honorary degree on Sunday, May 21, at 10:30 a.m., in the Margaret Bundy Scott Field House.

A peer-reviewed essay by Visiting Assistant Professor of Comparative Literature Nhora Lucía Serrano was recently published in the interdisciplinary volume Playthings in Early Modernity: Party Games, Word Games, Mind Games.

Hamilton College received an at-large bid to compete in the NCAA Division III Men's Hockey Championship. The Continentals will take on Oswego State on Saturday, March 11, at the Utica Aud. This is the Continentals' first trip to the NCAA men's hockey championship.

Professors Erol Balkan and John Bartle and Britt Hysell, director of the English for Speakers of Other Languages Program, presented “Refugees Welcome Here" at a conference at Vassar College on Feb. 25.
