On the eve of the public launch of Because Hamilton, a fundraising campaign to raise $400 million, Hamilton College trustees and friends surprised long-time volunteer Jeff Little by announcing they had committed $1.2 million to create an endowed scholarship in his name.

A member of the Oneida Indian Nation of New York joined the Hamilton community on Dec. 7 to help commemorate Samuel Kirkland’s birthday. A community lunch, sponsored by the Shenandoah-Kirkland Initiative, Chaplaincy, and other organizations on campus served as a celebration of Kirkland’s vision to connect with Haudenosaunee culture and the Oneida people.

Assistant Professor of Environmental Studies Aaron Strong presented “Mitigation and Adaptation” as part of a collaborative lecture series on climate change organized by the Town of New Hartford Climate Smart Committee.

Two students journeyed off the Hill and off the continent to travel as invited guests to the Latin American Council of Social Sciences (CLASCO) in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Savannah Kelly ‘21 and Kayla Self ‘21 spent Thanksgiving recess at the conference with support from the Kirkland Endowment.

Assistant Professor of Religious Studies Seth Schermerhorn recently co-organized and presented on a panel in the Indigenous Religious Traditions Unit at the American Academy of Religion (AAR) Annual Meeting in Denver.

Jared Belsky ’19 presented joint research at the 117th Annual Meeting of the American Anthropological Association in San Jose, Calif., — and won an award for the work about winegrowers in Umbria, Italy.

Members of the Hamilton community gathered on Dec. 4 for what is hoped will become an annual tradition – Lighting of Our Village – outside Sadove Student Center. The event focused on what light means to different people and different cultures.

“Convergence and Competition Among the New Turkish Middle Classes,” co-authored by Professor of Economics Erol Balkan appears in the December issue of Current History.
