David Smallen, Director of Information Technology Services, has been named Vice President for Information Technology. In his new role, Smallen will continue to supervise operations in Information Technology Services, while working with his fellow officers to plan for the future development of technology on campus.

Jamie Dubendorf, a 2000 graduate of Hamilton and recipient of a Bristol Fellowship, was the subject of a recent article in the Williams College-Mystic Program Alumni Magazine, the GAM. While at Hamilton, Dubendorf participated in Williams’ Mystic Program, a one-semester maritime studies program done in cooperation with Mystic Seaport Museum.

Dean of Students Flossie Mitchell announced two appointments to her office. Chris Willemsen has been named Associate Dean of Students (Academic), and Edith Toegel will return to the Dean of Students' office as Coordinator of Study Abroad Programs.

Hamilton's Baccalaureate Service took place on Saturday, May 19, at 3 p.m. in the Main Quadrangle. Sara Lawrence-Lightfoot, the Emily Hargroves Fisher Professor at the Harvard University Graduate School of Education, was this year's Baccalaureate speaker and presented her talk "On Voice, View and Visibility."

Richard Bernstein '80, chief quantitative strategist at Merrill Lynch, told Wall Street Week viewers last week to "sell technology -- profit margins are being squeezed dramatically for tech." When asked what sectors he likes, Bernstein said, "The story we've pounded the table on for the past year is the energy and power story."

The Kirkland Project has announced the teaching associates for College 130: Coming of Age in America, for Fall 2001. Teaching associates are Redell Armstrong ’02, Jessica Haab ’02, Sarah McDermott ’04, Byron Miller ’02, and Koert Wehberg ’04. This fall there will be five class sections, taught by professors Gillian Gane, Dana Luciano, Stephen Orvis, Nancy Rabinowitz, and Lisa Trivedi.

Richard Nelson, a 1972 Hamilton graduate, is receiving good reviews for Madame Melville, a memory play starring Macaulay Culkin that opened on Broadway on May 3.

Phyllis Breland has been appointed as Posse Mentor and Assistant Director of the Higher Education Opportunity Program, effective June 1, 2001. A 1980 graduate of Hamilton College, Breland was a theatre major, class speaker, and the first African-American woman inducted into Pentagon.

The Producers, the smash Broadway musical written by Mel Brooks and Thomas Meehan '51 received 15 Tony Award nominations, a new record. The musical opened in April to rave reviews and has already sold out tickets for the remainder of 2001.
