Spend just a few minutes with Norma Callejas ’26, and you’d be surprised to learn that a year ago this bubbly, enthusiastic sophomore was a timid, self-conscious first-year student who, before arriving at Hamilton, had never set foot outside her home state of Texas.

Gabriel Bit-Babik ’25 arrived on College Hill knowing he wanted to take advantage of the many opportunities Hamilton has to offer. The only problem was where to start.

Hamilton College has received a $400,000 grant from the Fred L. Emerson Foundation of Auburn, N.Y., to use as seed funding for a new advising and learning program the College will launch in 2021-22.

Hamilton’s inaugural ALEX (Advise, Learn, EXperience) advisors are preparing to launch the new program that links advising, academic support, and experiential learning. The advisors are Dean of Engaged Education Kathy Wolfe, Kevin Alexander ’13, Janine Oliver, and Hannah Stubley ’12.

Kathy Wolfe joins Hamilton College as dean of engaged education having most recently served as dean of undergraduate programs and professor of English at her alma mater Nebraska Wesleyan University in Lincoln, where she has worked for 20 years.

Hamilton College Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of Faculty Suzanne Keen has appointed Professor Penny Yee as the next associate dean of faculty effective July 1. She will replace Associate Dean and Professor of Literature Onno Oerlemans, who will resume teaching full time in the Literature and Creative Writing Department after a year’s sabbatical.

Several Hamilton faculty and staff recently spent a week in Albuquerque, N.M., at the National Academic Advising Association’s (NACADA) Academic Advising Summer Institute.
