This year, we celebrate 10 faculty members whose years of teaching have left a lasting mark on the Hamilton community. Retiring in June are Mark Bailey (computer science), Erol Balkan (economics), Sally Cockburn (mathematics), Ella Gant (art), Patty Kloidt (physical education), Cheryl Morgan (French), Quincy Newell (religious studies), Onno Oerlemans (literature), Margie Thickstun (literature), and Bruce Walczyk (dance).

“Reflections on Twenty Years of Teaching a College Seminar on the Adirondack Park,” by Onno Oerlemans, the Elizabeth J. McCormack Professor of Literature, was recently published in The Adirondack Journal of Environmental Studies.

As snow falls on Hamilton’s campus, many students take the opportunity to try a new winter activity: cross-country skiing. Students can rent skis from the Glen House and take them out on the cross-country ski course, located behind the Taylor Science Center. With heavy snow, this course requires maintenance to ensure a safe place for beginner skiers, and that maintenance requires time and fuel.

Associate Dean of Faculty and Professor of Literature Onno Oerlemans was recently interviewed on the BBC Radio program The Compass, in an episode about “Poetry and Animals.”

Members of the Adirondack seminar Forever Wild traveled to the Adirondack Park with their professor, Associate Dean of Faculty Onno Oerlemans, on a two-day field trip on Oct. 5 and 6.

Professor Onno Oerlemans of the Department of Literature and Creative Writing (and Associate Dean of the Faculty) published the essay "Sing and Be Heard: Birdsong and the Romantic Lyric" in the interdisciplinary journal Mosaic.

Poetry and Animals: Blurring the Boundaries with the Human, by Associate Dean of Faculty and Professor of Literature Onno Oerlemans, was published this month by Columbia University Press. The book presents different types of poetry about animals from the Middle Ages to today, classified into several categories.

The College/Environmental Studies 220 classes, taught by Onno Oerlemans and Robin Kinnel recently made their annual trek into the Adirondacks to see firsthand some of what they’ve been studying and to experience some of the beauty of the area.

Professor of English and Creative Writing Onno Oerlemans delivered a paper titled “‘The Self-Same Song:’ Birdsong and Romantic Poetics” at the North American Society for the Study of Romanticism (NASSR) conference in Winnipeg.

In what has become an end-of-semester tradition,  students were able to take a break from studying for finals and spend some time relaxing with pets during HAVOC’s  “Paws to Relax” in the Annex on Dec. 9.
