In these scenarios, insurance companies rely on reinsurance — the insurance for insurers that helps them weather the storm during rare mass claims incidents. This summer, Peter Dillman ’26 worked at Gallagher Reinsurance Brokers, applying his mathematics background to real-world scenarios.

Jampel Payldon ’27 hails from the Kingdom of Bhutan, a small nation nestled in the Himalayas. This summer, Payldon had the opportunity to represent her country on the world stage as an intern at the Permanent Mission of the Kingdom of Bhutan to the United Nations.

As the United States prepares to celebrate its 250th birthday, one Hamilton College student is getting intimately acquainted with our nation’s deep and storied history. Lily Watts ’26 spent her summer on the National Mall working as a curatorial exhibition development intern at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History. By sifting through troves of ancient documents and designing object display layouts, Watts reanimated the past two-and-a-half centuries of American life in preparation for 2026’s celebration.

From environmental justice in Flint, Mich., to hospitality in Thailand, Hamilton students made the most of their summer breaks by tackling internships in a breadth of fields and locales. Here are a selection of those learning experiences.

In 2023, the National Endowment for the Humanities awarded Hamilton a grant for its new curatorial studies program, and this summer a handful of students had the opportunity to work behind-the-scenes as interns at regional galleries and museums. We talked with a few about their experiences.

Emile (Em) Vasquez Mejia ’24 spent the fall 2023 semester living and learning in Washington, D.C., through Hamilton’s D.C. Program. The anthropology major and Posse Scholar shares here some of her favorite experiences and what she learned about city life, herself, and her future.

For Madeline Pittel ’24, interning at Sotheby’s has been a longstanding dream. In high school, she would walk by the auction house’s large New York office en route to a job elsewhere, all the while thinking, “I want to work there one day, and I’m going to wait for my junior year college internship. So this is a five- or six-year plan-in-the-making.”
