Through Emerson Foundation Grants and Levitt Summer Research Fellowships, Hamilton students forge their own research paths. Explore what three summer grantees said about the inspiration and significance of their projects.

Students and faculty ended the fall semester strong as they published academic papers, presented research, and won prestigious awards.

Hamilton students who conducted grant-funded research with faculty this summer showed off the results of their work at a recent poster session.

Alex Kim ’25, a music and math double-major, spent his summer exploring machine learning and music through the help of an Emerson grant. With the guidance of Assistant Professor of Music Charlotte Botha, Kim developed a vocal register classification tool through machine learning models.

Many people assume that being pre-med means sacrificing hobbies and travel opportunities. Not so for Carolyn Levin ’26, a biochemistry and art double major, who is nurturing her pre-med goals by tapping into her enthusiasm for ceramics. With the help of an Emerson grant and the Global Study Office, she has traversed continents, languages, and ceramics studios to explore her passion.

In the stagnant air of subway stations, unnoticed by countless commuters, the sounds of street musicians ornament the harsh rumble of passing trains. Some of these performers go viral for their abilities; many more remain unseen and unheard. But how exactly do they contribute to the fabric of the communities they inhabit?
