With classes, labs, theatre productions and other responsibilities, some days start at 9 a.m. and end 14 hours later for Kevin Herrera ’16. If Herrera isn’t the only geo-sciences/theatre double major you’ve ever heard of, he’s likely the most determined. He still has the first-year planner in which he meticulously listed the requirements for the wildly divergent majors. He’s en route to both. Herrera admits the combination isn’t easy to manage, but says he’s in the right place to make it happen. If you want a school “in which you can do almost anything you can imagine, there really is no better place,” he says about Hamilton College.

 A team of Hamilton students won the programming competition at the 21st annual Consortium for Computing Sciences in Colleges - Northeastern Region, held at Hamilton on April 29 -30. Linnea Sahlberg ’17, Ryan Woo ’17 and Alex Dennis ’18 were the winners from among 39 teams. 

The Oral Communication Center hosted the second annual Three Minute Thesis competition on April 30. Open to all members of the senior class, the competition offers cash prizes for the students who can most effectively summarize their senior projects in three minutes or less. This year’s competition hosted 15 students whose majors and interests ranged from post-colonial economics to concussion management for athletes.

Professor of English and Creative Writing Vincent Odamtten discussed Nnedi Okorafor’s “Who Fears Death: Telling Trauma, Telling Justice” at the 42nd annual conference of the African Literature Association (ALA) held April 6-9 in Atlanta.

“‘Too Smart to be Religious?’ Discreet Seeking Amidst Religious Stigma at an Elite College,” an article by Kateri Boucher ’17 and Assistant Professor of Sociology Jaime Kucinskas, was recently published in a thematic issue of the journal Social Inclusion.

Associate Vice President for Facilities and Planning Steve Bellona received the 2016 Decade of Excellence award, given by the Mohawk Valley Engineers Executive Council (MVEEC). The award was presented April 28 at the 66th Annual Mohawk Valley Technical Awards Banquet, held at The Beeches in Rome, N.Y.

The Hamilton College and Community Masterworks Chorale with the Hamilton College Choir and members of Symphoria will perform their spring concert on Tuesday, May 3, at 7:30 p.m., in Wellin Hall, Schambach Center for Music and the Performing Arts.

Theresa Lopez, the Chauncey Truax Postdoctoral Fellow and Visiting Assistant Professor of Philosophy, presented her research at the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) on April 16. In her presentation, Lopez proposed a holistic method for using findings from the science of moral cognition to guide moral belief revision.

Nine high school students from the Urban Assembly School for Emergency Management (UASEM) in New York City visited Hamilton on April 21-22 to collaborate with students and faculty in the Communication Department. The department’s relationship with the UASEM supports student/faculty research on privacy, media and community.
