Hong Gang Jin, the William R. Kenan Professor of East Asian Languages and Literatures, recently published an article in Journal of Chinese Teaching in the World (JCTW). The article, “Effects of Selective Attention and Noticing the Gap in CFL Acquisition of Chinese Manner Complement of ‘De’” was co-authored by Yin Zhang, ACC field director in Beijing. JCTW is a major peer-reviewed journal in the CFL field.

Associate Professor of Art History Stephen J. Goldberg presented a paper titled “On the Aesthetic Reception of the Art of Chinese Calligraphy,” at the Mid-Atlantic Regional Association for Asian Studies, held at Villanova University in October.

The Hamilton College F.I.L.M. series will screen Peter Watkins’ 1987 docudrama The Journey on Sunday, Nov. 8, at 1 p.m. in the Kirner-Johnson Auditorium. The film about the possible consequences of nuclear war includes scenes filmed in Utica. Following the screening, there will be a discussion with some of those who made major contributions to the Mohawk Valley sequences of the film, including pollster John Zogby; Robert Baber, dean of Pratt Art School at the Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute; and Rick Werner, the John Stewart Kennedy Professor of Philosophy at Hamilton. The event is free and open to the public.

Professor of Government David Paris '71 contributed an op-ed to Inside Higher Ed (11/6/09). In “The Clock is Ticking,” Paris writes that it is only a matter of time before the Obama administration, like its predecessor, focuses intently on higher education accountability. College leaders shouldn't wait, Paris warns.

Burgess Professor of French Roberta Krueger has contributed an introductory essay, “Teach Your Children Well: Medieval Conduct Guides for Youths,” in Medieval Conduct Literature: An Anthology of Vernacular Guides to Behaviour for Youths, with English Translations (ed. Mark D. Johnston). It is published for the Medieval Academy of America by the University of Toronto Press.

Jay G. Williams '54, the Walcott-Bartlett Professor of Religion, published an article titled "Christianity and Slavery" with Bible Interpretation (bibleinterp.com).

On November 4, students in the Washington Program met with Stuart Ingis ’93 and the Honorable Birch Bayh, partners of Venable LLP. A nationally recognized expert in Internet law, Ingis represents clients in federal privacy and Internet-related legislation and rulemaking proceedings.

Following the September 11th attacks, torture has been made a conscious policy choice of our government,  journalist and Utica native Mark Danner told the audience in the Hamilton College Chapel on Nov. 4. His lecture, "Obama, Torture and Human Rights," detailed the issue of torture within modern day American politics.

Visiting Associate Professor of Religious Studies Brent Rodriguez-Plate guest edited an issue of the journal CrossCurrents (Wiley-Blackwell publishers). The theme of the September 2009 issue is "The Varieties of Contemporary Pilgrimage."

Kyla Gorman '09 has been awarded $10,000 by the Penny Arcade Scholarship Program. Gorman intends to use her money to pursue a degree in game design from The University of Southern California.
