Melissa Williams’ ’89 path to Sierra Club and a career in environmentalism has had a few twists and turns, almost like the trip down a river — the French Broad River to be exact.

On Jan. 14, 45 new members of the Class of 2026 officially joined the Hamily. Orientation leaders provided a warm welcome to the January admits as they checked in, moved into their residence hall homes, and got right to it with orientation group meetings, a welcome luncheon with President David Wippman, Dean of Faculty Ngoni Munemo, Vice President for Enrollment Management Monica Inzer, and Dean of Students Chris Card. They signed the College register at matriculation in Buttrick Hall and learned about Hamilton’s Honor Code.

When media outlets feature faculty and staff discoveries and accomplishments, it helps strengthen Hamilton’s reputation as one of the top liberal arts colleges in the country. In 2022, nearly 4,800 articles, radio programs, and television shows featured Hamilton College.

Three Hamilton environmental studies majors — Emily Benson ’23, Katie Tanner ’23, and Ellie Sangree ’24 — presented their research at the American Geophysical Union Annual Meeting in Chicago in December. The students were accompanied by Aaron Strong and Heather Kropp, assistant professors of environmental studies.

One of Hamilton College’s most generous benefactors and a leading businessman and philanthropist in the Utica community has died. F. Eugene Romano, a Utica native and a 1949 Hamilton graduate, passed away on Saturday, Jan.7. He was 94.

Silas D. Childs Professor in Chemistry Karen Brewer and Assistant Professor of Art History Arathi Menon are the most recent recipients of the fellowship that supports faculty interested in creating digitally focused assignments, expanding learning opportunities, and developing technology-enabled pedagogical strategies in any curricular area.

Reaching for the sky, Tracey Stroock McFarland ’90 recently floated a turn as an actress to lead producer with The Kite Runner on Broadway. The play, an adaptation of the bestselling 2003 novel about atonement for a childhood betrayal between friends in Afghanistan, played a limited run on the Great White Way last summer.

Amidst the bustling crowds at Commons and McEwen dining halls, language faculty and students sit around a table to enjoy a meal while conversing in their chosen studied language. Hamilton’s “language tables,” as they are known, provide both valuable speaking experience and community building opportunities.

Associate Professor of Government Kira Jumet has been selected as a New York Six (NY6) Mellon Academic Leadership Fellow and will have opportunities to engage across the six-member consortium and access to mentors who will be a resource for their professional and leadership development.

Following a summer spent conducting research in Oriskany Creek and working alongside their faculty mentor, two student researchers recently earned recognition for their work at the Geological Society of America's Annual Meeting.
