Ben Bardwell ’00 started racing sailboats at age 15, and he didn’t come to it through a yacht club. His dad was a commercial fisherman, and both his parents imparted a love of the ocean to their children.

If the international law seminar had to be taught remotely, which it unexpectedly did, the professor was determined to make the most of it. Turning to his professional connections, he secured three distinguished guests with experience directly related to issues students had studied.

Eleni Broadwell ’20, the recipient of a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship, is eager to teach English in Taiwan next year. “Taiwan has made great strides in the past few decades to move away from rote learning and make schooling more interactive,” Broadwell said. “There’s a greater emphasis on critical thinking skills and the arts, which I think is wonderful.”

After graduation, Haley Hassell ’20 will begin work as an executive trainee with Ruder Finn, a public relations firm that is one of the world's largest privately owned communications agencies. After completing training, Hassell will work as an assistant account executive.

Her path to a job with a nonprofit in Ethiopia began with Hamilton and a prestigious Watson Fellowship, with several career stops en route. Mary Phillips ’11 is a technical advisor for a program that expands access to contraception for married teens.

Academic achievement prizes, prize scholarships, and other recognition of student accomplishments were announced at Hamilton’s first virtual Class & Charter Day convocation on May 11. President David Wippman announced the award recipients from the Chapel in the annual event that this year was viewable online.

Three faculty members were named recipients of Hamilton’s highest awards for teaching in the 2019-20 academic year. Dean of Faculty Suzanne Keen announced the honors at the May faculty meeting.
