Steve Culbertson, a 1979 Hamilton graduate, wrote an op-ed for The Atlanta Journal-Constitution (April 24) about President Bush's call for volunteering. Culbertson says many already overtaxed nonprofits fear an onslaught of volunteers, but adds that there are plenty of opportunities for community service outside the traditional nonprofits. He is president and CEO of Youth Service America, a Washington-based nonprofit organization.

The Hamilton College Basketball team and the National Association of Basketball Coaches invites boys and girls enrolled in Grades 4 through 9 to the 2002 Coaches vs. Cancer: Continental Basketball Day Clinic at Hamilton College on Saturday, April 27. The clinic will take place from 9 a.m. to noon, and the cost is only $20. All the proceeds from this clinic will go toward the American Cancer Society to further its cause in the fight against cancer.

Asian Cultural Society presents Eliot Chang, one of New York City's hottest comics, at Hamilton on Saturday, April 27, at 7:30 pm in the Events Barn. A workshop after the performance will focus on stereotyping of Asians by the media. Funded by Student Assembly

Naturalist, author and activist Bruce Kershner will deliver a lecture, "A Stunning Tour of the Last Ancient Forests in New York State" on Wednesday, April 24, at 3 p.m. in the Science Auditorium. The lecture, sponsored by the biology department and environmental studies program, is free and open to the public.

Tim Whitehead, a 1985 graduate of Hamilton College and head hockey coach at the University of Maine, was named the winner of the 2002 Spencer Penrose Award, which goes to the nation's top Division I hockey coach. The Spencer Penrose award is chosen by members of the American Hockey Coaches Association, and the award will be handed out at the organization's annual banquet. That banquet is set for April 27 in Naples, Fla.

Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick, Distinguished Professor of English at the City University of New York's Graduate Center, will deliver the Winton Tolles Lecture on Thursday, April 25, at 8 p.m. in the College Chapel. The title of her talk is "A Dialogue on Love."

Associate Dean of the Faculty and Associate Professor of Chemistry Timothy Elgren recently published "Sol-gel Encapsulated Horseradish Peroxidase: A Catalytic Material for Peroxidation," in the Journal of the American Chemical Society. Elgren co-authored the paper with Hamilton undergraduates Mauro Castro '99 and Robert Parker '04.

Hamilton College hosted the Ninth Annual Hudson River Undergraduate Mathematics Conference on April 27. This one-day conference brought more than 400 students and faculty from universities and colleges in New York and New England to Hamilton's campus. Co-organizers were Associate Professor of Mathematics Rob Kantrowitz and Professor of Mathematics Richard Bedient.
