Building on data from  the 2016 Hamilton College Levitt Poll titled “The Russian Elite 2016,” a group of students this summer is researching the diffusion of foreign models into Russia through a Levitt Center grant.

Hamilton College President David Wippman announced the promotion of four faculty members to the rank of professor.  Heather Buchman, music; Stephen Ellingson, sociology; Ella Gant, art; and Chaise LaDousa, anthropology, were promoted effective July 1.

For the past two summers Irina Rojas ’18 has volunteered as a translator in the Labor and Delivery Unit at Tufts Medical Center.

Symbols in the Wilderness: Early Masonic Survivals in Upstate New York, co-authored by Director of Special Collections Christian Goodwillie, began with a chance glance at a building as he drove to Cooperstown, N.Y. Intrigued by the structure, Western Star Lodge and now the Bridgewater Masonic Lodge, he became even more interested in the art work it once housed. Thus Goodwillie’s exploration of Masonic symbols – expressed in paintings, murals, textiles and graphics – began.  

Tatenda Chakoma ’18 is exploring a possible future in neuroscience as he interns at UCLA Medical School, Department of Neurology this summer. This internship is a summer program run by Hamilton alumnus Dr. Bruce Dobkin ’69. Each year he selects one Hamilton neuroscience student to do biomedical training and research at UCLA Neurology. Chakoma’s internship is supported by the Sandra Solomon Internship Fund, managed by the Career Center.

Rumors suggest that presumed Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton’s short list of vice presidential candidates includes Hamilton alumnus and U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack ’72. Although Virginia Senator Tim Kaine tops the list, many outlets point to Vilsack as “the person on the list she can most trust” and “the safest pick of all.”

Mariah Walzer ’17, an archaeology major, spent this summer analyzing the lithic artifacts recovered from 2015 field school at the Slocan Narrows Pithouse Village in British Columbia.

Wippman grew up in suburban Minneapolis, the son of a lawyer who graduated from the law school he would someday lead. In his AP History class at Edina High School, he was the kid who knew all the answers without being annoying about it.

As a high school student, Andres Aguilar ’19 participated in the Pomona College Academy for Youth Success (PAYS), an intensive summer program that prepares underrepresented students for admission to selective colleges. Now, after his first year at Hamilton, through the First Year Forward program, he is returning to PAYS to work as a trainer, helping students to succeed in the same way he has succeeded. His plans don’t stop there, either; Aguilar has big goals for helping even more high school students in the future.

Recent graduate Nelly Alba '16 is continuing her passion for education by joining Teach for America.
