Hamilton's 2009 Public Speaking Competition will take place on Saturday, Feb. 28, from 1-5 p.m. in the Chapel. In this annual event students will compete for three different prizes: The McKinney Prize, The Clark Prize, and The Warren Wright Prize. 

The McKinney Prize is awarded to one student from each class for a 5-8 minute persuasive speech that has relevance and interest for a Hamilton College audience. Students competing for this prize are Hanbin Yang '12, Rachel Pohl '11, Andrew Harris '11, Thomas Coppola '10, Elijah LaChance '10, Rebecca Griffin '09 and Stuart Lombardi '09. 

In the Clark Prize competition, students will address the topic "The Drinking Age - Should it be Reexamined or Frozen at 21?" Clark Prize competition is open to the students in the senior class in all disciplines. Participants are Joseph Liotta, Rebecca Griffin and Kara Labs.

The Wright Prize is awarded to a student who has taken or is currently enrolled in Rhetorical Act (COM 210), for a six to eight minute informative speech on a socially significant issue of current interest. The 2009 competitors are Greg Kreitzer '11, Griffin and Lombardi. 

Judges will include Julia Cowles '84, trustee and attorney/partner, Davis Polk & Wardwell; J.K. Hage '72, managing partner, Hage & Hage, LLC (Alumni Council Executive Committee; chair, MARC) ;Jennifer Irons, assistant professor of sociology; Susan Jasko, associate professor of communication studies, California University of Pennsylvania; Cynthia Reynolds, secretary to the dean of students; Patrick Reynolds, acting dean of faculty and professor of biology; Sharon Rivera, assistant professor of government; Stephen Sadove '73, trustee and chairman/ceo, Saks, Incorporated; Susan Skerritt K'77, trustee and managing director, Bank of New York Mellon; David Thompson, Blood Fitness Center director and professor of physical education; Nancy Thompson, dean of students; and Jay Williams '54, Walcott-Bartlett Professor of Religion.
