Baseball pounds Framingham State 10-3

The Hamilton College Continentals won their second game in as many days to start the season, routing the Framingham State University Rams 10-3 in Auburndale, Fla., on Tuesday.

The teams were scheduled to play a doubleheader but will now play the second game on Wednesday, March 19, at 9:30 a.m. Joe Jensen ’15 led the Continentals with three hits, three runs scored and two stolen bases.

The Continentals (2-0 overall) scored in each of the first five innings to open a 10-0 lead and three Hamilton pitchers combined to allow six hits over nine innings. Starter Alex Pachella ’15 shut out the Rams over four one-hit innings, striking out four and walking one, and picked up the win. Colin Henneberger ’14 gave up two hits in two innings while fanning two batters. Finlay O’Hara ’17 earned the save in his first collegiate appearance, striking out a pair and allowing three hits over the final three innings.

Andrew Haser ’17 hit run-scoring doubles in the third and fourth innings. Kenny Collins ’17 and Ryan Wolfsberg ’17 also drove in two runs apiece. Chris Collins ’17 finished with two hits.

Jensen singled three times and raised his career total to 34 stolen bases (five short of the school record). He led off the game with a single and scored the Continentals’ first run on a sacrifice fly by Kenny Collins.

In the second, Jensen singled home Mike Chiseri ’16 – who reached on a one-out walk – and the Continentals scored their third run on an infield throwing error. Haser followed a third-inning single by Steve LaRochelle ’14 with a double to left and came around to score on another Ram error.

Wolfsberg and Haser had run-scoring hits in Hamilton’s three-run fourth. Kenny Collins and Wolfsberg singled in runs in the fifth inning to close out the Continental scoring.

Pachella faced just nine batters over the first three innings (a lead-off single in the second was erased when Framingham State’s Mark Mainini ’15 was caught stealing) then worked out of trouble in the fourth. He issued a one-out walk to Jake Wardwell ’16 and hit Ivan Colon ‘15. One out later the runners executed a double steal but Pachella stranded them by inducing an inning-ending grounder.

The Rams (3-2) averted the shutout with a run in the sixth and two in the eighth. Colon drew a one-out walk and came around to score Framingham State’s first run on a wild pitch. In the eighth the Rams loaded the bases with no outs. Colon drew a leadoff walk, Mainini was hit by a pitch and RJ Gray ’15 singled to right field. Colon scored on a double play and Emmanuel Powers ’17 beat out a slow roller to third to bring home Framingham State’s final run.
