Nhora Lucía Serrano.
Associate Director for Digital Learning and Research Nhora Serrano was a member of the selection committee for the Graphic Novels and Comics Round Table’s (GNCRT) first “Best Graphic Novels for Children Reading List.” The GNCRT is a collaborative organization of the American Library Association (ALA).
This list highlights the best graphic novels, published in late 2020 through 2021, for 5- to 12-year-old readers. It aims to increase awareness of the graphic novel medium, raise voices of diverse comics creators, and aid library staff in the development of graphic novel collections.

The list is organized by age group, and includes a section highlighting the top 10 books. The top 10 selections include such titles as Pawcasso by Remy Lai, The Magic Fish by Trung Le Nguyen, and Just Roll with It by Lee Durfey-Lavoie and Veronica Agarwal.

In a press release announcing the list, GNCRT President Matthew Noe said, “Launching a new, carefully curated list of the best comics for children would have been a daunting task even during the best of times … But thanks to the expertise, attention, and passion of this year’s committee, we can now present … our inaugural Best Graphic Novels for Children Reading List.

“In the top 10 alone we’ve got witchcraft, friendly animals, and a story of finding the courage to be one’s true self that will leave even adult readers teary-eyed,” he noted.

Joining Serrano on the selection committee were school and public librarians and others in the field of library science from across the country.
