Assistant Professor of Economics Emily Conover presented a paper at The Econometric Society Australasian Meeting which was held in Adelaide, Australia, in July.
The paper titled “Consequences of Easier Access to Alcohol: New Zealand Evidence,” joint with Dean Scrimgeour at Colgate University, evaluates the effects on hospitalization and mortality of a reduction in the minimum legal purchase age for alcohol in New Zealand. They find a substantial increase in alcohol-related hospitalizations among those newly eligible to legally purchase liquor, but no evidence of a spillover effect to those younger than 18.
