Hamilton College's 26 student Emergency Medical Technicians will be honored this week (Nov. 10-16) during National Collegiate Emergency Medical Services Week.

The Hamilton College Emergency Medical Service (HCEMS) is a New York State certified agency that is made up of 26 student EMTs who provide 24-hour emergency service to the campus community during the academic year. Hamilton's is the only New York State EMS agency on a college campus in this area. Each EMT must be NYS certified and volunteers 30-40 hours a week, during which he or she is on call to assist anyone needing medical attention. EMTs respond to an average of 50-60 medical emergencies on campus each semester.

"I feel very strongly about the time and commitment the EMT's put into HCEMS.  They volunteer their time and provide an invaluable service to the college,"said Diann Lynch, RN, HCEMS Coordinator.

HCEMS works closely with the Clinton Fire Department and the Central Oneida County Volunteer Ambulance Corps. Hamilton students who are EMTs represent the sophomore, junior and senior classes and a variety of academic majors, from anthropology and biology to public policy and geology.
