The Hamilton College Continentals split a non-conference doubleheader with the Calvin College Knights in Auburndale, Fla., on Saturday afternoon.

The Continentals (4-3 overall) bounced back from a 4-3 loss in the opener with a 5-4 come-from-behind win in eight innings in the nightcap.

Brett Mele ’17 hit a one-out single in the eighth to score the go-ahead run and cap Hamilton’s comeback as the Continentals erased a 4-1 fifth-inning deficit. Mele's hit brought home Chris Collins ‘17, who reached base when his bunt was misplayed.

After the Knights (5-3) scored four times in the second to take a 4-1 lead, the Continentals started their rally with a leadoff walk to Joe Jensen ’15 in the fifth. Jensen moved to second on a walk to Mele, stole third and scored on a sacrifice fly by Ryan Wolfsberg ‘17.

An inning later, Jensen and Chris Collins hit back-to-back RBI singles to tie the score. Steve LaRochelle '14 singled to center field to lead off the sixth and Michael Chiseri ’16 hit a one-out single to right.

The Continentals took a 1-0 lead their first time up. Chris Collins singled to left and moved to third when Mele’s infield grounder was thrown away. Wolfsberg followed with a single up the middle.

In the opener, Calvin scored single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to erase Hamilton’s 3-1 advantage. The Continentals loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the sixth and put the tying run on base in the seventh. Wolfsberg hit RBI singles in the first and third innings, and Mele singled in a run in the fourth to put Hamilton up 3-1.

Hamilton's spring trip continues with another non-conference doubleheader against Union College on Sunday, March 23.
