Professor of Mathematics Robert Kantrowitz ’82 presented a talk titled “Further variations on the theme of completeness” at the Joint Mathematics Meetings held Jan. 6-9 in Seattle.

Kantrowitz highlighted the fact that convergence of all sequences of bounded variation in an ordered field is equivalent to the Dedekind completeness of the field. This criterion allows for short proofs for other expressions of completeness and facilitates the inclusion of yet three more reformulations featuring the series tests of Dedekind, Dirichlet and Abel.

The Joint Mathematics Meetings are the combined annual meetings of the American Mathematical Society and the Mathematical Association of America.
