Meredith Madden, visiting assistant professor of Education Studies, recently published an article in the journal Equity & Excellence in Education. In the article, "Illuminating Low-Income Pregnant and Parenting Students' Experiences with Community College," gendered analyses of in-depth interviews from low-income pregnant and parenting students across three community college contexts revealed the compromised classroom and campus-wide experiences of this marginalized student group.
"Community colleges are important sites of educational access and opportunities for social mobility for many students," says Madden, "however, it is imperative that institutional practices and policies at community colleges support the diverse needs of all students. This begins with understanding the histories and social locations of students such as low-income pregnant and parenting student mothers.
