Hamilton College men's rowing alum Willy Cowles '09 (Farmington, Conn.) competed with the U.S. men's eight crew at the 12th annual E.ON Hanse Canal Cup in Rendsburg, Germany, in a three-day event that concluded on Sept. 15.

Cowles and the U.S. finished second to Germany in a 12.7-kilometer head race on the Kiel Canal on Sunday. The German crew crossed the line in a time of 36 minutes, 34.31 seconds and the U.S. posted a time of 36:58.13. Great Britain was third in 37:52.06 and Poland was fourth in 38:40.54.

The Canal Cup also included a 500-meter ergometer competition on Friday night and continued with Saturday’s 400-meter sprint race. The U.S. men's eight won the ergometer event and was second in the sprints.

Cowles and men's eight teammate Matt Miller won the double sculls event at the 2013 National Selection Regatta #2.
