The University of Rochester defeated Hamilton College in the varsity eight on the Erie Canal in Rome, N.Y., on April 22.

All races were 2,000 meters in length. Temperatures were in the 40s with overcast skies and light, variable winds.

Rochester's varsity eight covered the course in 6 minutes, 24.65 seconds, and Hamilton came in at 6:29.14. Jaime Leiva-Cabrera '14 was coxswain, Joe Ely '12 was the stroke and Andre Matias '12 was in the bow seat. Seats seven through two in descending order were as follows: Chris Visentin '12, Rafael De La Rosa '12, Adam Minchew '12, Aaron Whiteman '13, Dylan Jackson '13 and Jack Wildman '15.

The Yellowjackets edged the Continentals by .72 seconds for first place in the second varsity eight. Rochester finished at 6:35.13 and Hamilton came in at 6:35.85. Monica Gutierrez '15 was the coxswain. The rest of the boat included Patrick English '15 at stroke, Simon Judd '13 in the bow seat and the following rowers (seats seven through two in descending order): Gardner Reed '14, Jacob Wagner '15, Alex Cates '15, Grant Meglis '14, Max Geiduschek '14 and Matt Poterba '12.

Rochester covered the course in 7:11.83 in the varsity four, and Hamilton finished in 7:22.12. Leiva-Cabrera was coxswain, De La Rosa was the stroke, Ely was in the bow seat, Micnchew was the 3-seat and Whiteman was the 2-seat.

Rochester's "A" entry in the novice four crossed the line first in 7:25.39. Hamilton came in second in 7:43.11 and the Yellowjackets' "B" entry finished third in 8:38.41. Gutierrez was coxswain and the rest of the boat included Poterba at stroke, Geiduschek in the bow seat, Judd in the 3-seat and Meglis in the 2-seat.

Hamilton competes in the 2012 New York State Championships in Whitney Point, N.Y., on Saturday and Sunday, May 5 and 6.
