Hamilton College's Andre Matias ’11 (Luanda, Angola/Blair Academy [N.J.]) competed in the 2010 Under-23 World Rowing Championships in Brest, Belarus, from July 22 to July 25.
 
There were 24 entries in the lightweight men's single sculls, and Matias finished fourth in the "D" final. According to Hamilton head crew coach Eric Summers, the overall field in the event was considerably stronger this year than it was last year. Matias represented the African nation of Angola and qualified for this event at the African Rowing Championships earlier in July.

On Thursday, July 22, Matias took sixth place in his heat, crossing the finish line with a time of 7 minutes, 52.40 seconds. In one of four repechages on Friday, Matias claimed fifth place in 8:13.92.
 
On Saturday, Matias competed in a C/D semifinal and recorded a time of 7:38.37 for a fifth place finish. On the final day, Matias crossed the finish line with a time of 7:38.91 in the "D" final.
