Anthony Carello '09 made seven saves, including six in the second half, to help lead Hamilton College to a 2-0 win against New York University in an NCAA Division III championships tournament first round game played at New Jersey Institute of Technology in Newark, N.J., on Nov. 10.
Max Akuamoah-Boateng '09 gave Hamilton (10-4-3 overall) a 1-0 lead in the 41st minute with his fourth goal. Dan Dropkin-Frank '09 was credited with the assist. Dropkin-Frank crossed the ball to Akuamoah-Boateng, who headed the ball into the back of the net from five yards out. Akuamoah-Boateng is tied with Jesse Arroyave '11 for the team lead with nine points.
Topher Breedlove '08 provided the Continentals some insurance with his second goal in as many games in the 59th minute. Breedlove's shot from 18 yards away sailed over the keeper's head. He has five points in the last three games -- all Hamilton wins.
The Continentals claimed their first NCAA victory since 2000, when they advanced to the quarterfinals. Hamilton's NCAA tournament record is 2-3-1 in four appearances. The Continentals improved to 8-2 this year in games away from home. Head coach Perry Nizzi has 98 wins at Hamilton.
NYU (13-5-1) advanced to the national semifinals in 2006. The Continentals play New Jersey City University in a second round game at NJIT on Sunday, Nov. 11, at 7 p.m. New Jersey City blanked Castleton State College 2-0 in Saturday night's first game.
Carello recorded his second straight shutout and his fourth this year, but it wasn't easy. Hamilton owned a two-goal lead midway through the second half when Carello was forced to make four saves between the 72nd and 75th minutes. That flurry proved to be the Violets' last gasp as they were credited with one wide shot in the final 15:00 of regulation. The Continentals have posted 10 shutouts in 17 games.
NYU held a commanding 19-5 advantage in shots and took six corner kicks to none for Hamilton. Breedlove and Akuamoah-Boateng took all five shots for the Continentals.
