Hamilton College's Matthew Haas '19 captured the "C" singles flight championship at the 2015 St. Lawrence University Fall Classic, which was held inside Newell Field House due to rain on Sept. 12 and 13.

Haas (on the left in picture) won four matches en route to his title but he wasn't the only freshman who enjoyed a successful weekend for the Continentals. Lars Scannell '19 reached the finals of the "B" singles flight and teamed up with Ian Antonoff '16 to advance to the "A" doubles flight championship match.

Haas breezed to an 8-0 win against Nazareth College's Lamar Hunt in the first round and edged St. Lawrence's Spencer Whitmire 8-6 in the quarterfinals. Haas defeated the University of Rochester's Ryan Zu in straight sets, 7-6 (8-0), 6-1, in the semifinals and dealt Zu's teammate Jun Yuminaga a similar fate in the final by scores of 6-4, 6-3.

Scannell came all the way from the preliminary round to play in the "B" flight title match. He defeated Rochester Institute of Technology's Ken Chou, 8-4, dispatched Ithaca College's Lorenzo Viguie-Ramos 8-5 in the first round and advanced to the semifinals with another 8-5 win against Rochester's Andrew Nunno. Scannell faced teammate Jack Vissicchio '17 in the semis and rallied for a 4-6, 6-1, 11-9 victory. Scannell finally was bested by Rochester's Aaron Mevorach, 6-3, 7-6 (4-0).

Antonoff and Scannell knocked off Ithaca's Viguie-Ramos and Michael Gardiner 8-3 in the first round and squeaked past Rochester's Ben Shapiro and Masaru Fujimaki 9-7 in the quarters. They advanced to the final with a tight 9-8 (3-0) win against St. Lawrence's Robert Schmitz and Dean Sponholz, but lost 8-3 to Rochester's Mevorach and Ian Baranowski.

Vissicchio won a pair of matches in "B" flight singles. He defeated Hobart College's Patrick Dunk 8-5 in the first round and posted another 8-5 win against St. Lawrence's Marco Amendola in the quarters before his loss to Scannell.

Alex Streich '18 advanced to the semifinals of "C" flight singles by cruising to an 8-2 win against Hobart's JM Becker in the first round and edging St. Lawrence's Kevin Frommer 9-8 (3-0) in the quarterfinals. Austin Lokre '16 easily won his first round match against RIT's Jason Alexander, 8-2.

Two Hamilton doubles teams won a match in the "B" flight. Lokre and Streich claimed an 8-4 victory against Rochester's Alexander Punj and Yuminaga in the first round. Haas and Vissicchio received a bye into the quarterfinals where they defeated Rochester's Keith Jensen and Zu, 9-7.

The Continentals travel to SUNY Oneonta for a non-conference match on Thursday, Sept. 17, at 4 p.m.
