Volunteers from the Hamilton College community visited 12 sites on Saturday, Jan. 25, for the 5th annual Martin Luther King, Jr., Service Project. Individual students, staff, and student organizations participated in the day-long projects at non-profit organizations around Utica. A total of 204 people participated. Following are the sites visited, services performed and groups who participated at each:
Cosmopolitan Center (cleaning for this aftershool center and community center for Washington Court housing projects): 11 including Delta Upsilon fraternity
Loretto Center (visiting with elderly residents including dementia wards): 26 members of women's lacrosse team
United Cerebral Palsy -- Sauquoit (visiting with residents of this center for the developmentally disabled): 3
United Cerebral Palsy -- Utica (cleaning and painting youth residence for kids with special needs): 13 including an Alternative Spring Break (ASB) group and some members of Chi Psi fraternity
ElderLife (painting a large common room in this senior community center): 8 including an ASB group and an RA-sponsored team from a residence hall
JCTOD (shoveling snow, cleaning, computer assistance for afterschool program and community center for kids in the Cornhill section of Utica): 22 members of Alpha Delta Phi fraternity
Emmaus House (sorting clothes, toiletries, and other items for the women and children of this shelter for victims of domestic violence): 9 mostly ASB students
Hope House (painting attic and cleaning basement for meal program & hospitality center): 6 members of BSU
Thea Bowman Bridges Program (cleaning, moving furniture & organizing for afterschool program): 13 members of Clinton Quaker meeting house
Boys and Girls Club -- Utica East (clearing out basement of afterschool/ community center program): 11 members of summer USE program
Children's Museum (helping staff floors and exhibits and kids' birthday parties): 9 members of an Adirondack Adventure group
Martin Luther Home (visiting with residents of senior assisted living home): 11 including ASB trip and members of Delta Upsilon
Salvation Army (painting, cleaning gym, bathrooms, classrooms): 22 members of Kappa Sigma Alpha sorority
On-Campus tutoring (meeting one-on-one with students from Proctor High, Donovan and Kennedy Middle School on Hamilton's campus): 40 including folks from ASB, BSU
Organizers are working on ways to help some groups continue in volunteer efforts for the rest of the semester.
