Associate Professor of French Joseph Mwantuali gave an invited talk titled "The Congo in the Colonial and Post-colonial Imagination" for the Colgate University Humanities Colloquium on March 22.
Mwanuali described the lecture: "Fifty years after it gained independence, the Democratic Republic of the Congo seems to remain the unknown 'Heart of Darkness' for the West, even as it is going from one dictatorship to another, from one crime against humanity to another. This talk examined on one hand what Congolese writers/artists are doing about this situation, and, on the other hand, the reason why the real Congo remains so 'unknown' to the West and what some writers/journalists from the West are doing to help bring some light into this 'heart of Darkness.'"
